About the Job
The BSN nursing instructor works under the direction of the Lead Faculty/Associate Dean/Dean and the VP of Academics. The BSN nursing instructor is actively engaged in course delivery and is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, grading, course creation, proctoring, test review, and evaluation of assigned courses. The didactic or theory instructor is the lead course instructor and is responsible for coordinating and overseeing specific courses. The instructor teaches theory and practical applications using instructional methods and teaching skills in the classroom, Skills Lab, Simulation, and affiliated clinical sites. The instructor is also attentive to the needs of our students, provides mentorship, and maintains a satisfactory working relationship with students.    

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:     

Classroom Instruction:
  • Possess knowledge of the material taught to students.    
  • Delivers curriculum following syllabi, according to program objectives and timelines.   
  • Communicate effectively and possess the ability to impart knowledge to others.  
  • Remain current with industry standards for the assigned program area.    
  • Employ appropriate instructional resources and evidence-based strategies to enhance the learning process to meet diverse student needs.    
  • Manage and maintain the classroom in good physical and academic productive order to support learning and student success.   
  • Is well-organized and prepared for class; starts and ends class consistently on time.   

Outside of Class Time:
  • Prepare lesson plans and other curriculum-related materials.    
  • Posts office hours and is available to students during that time.   
  • Promptly record student conferences and counseling on Corrective Action Plans (CAP) forms.    
  • Works additional time weekly, as needed, to address individual student needs outside the classroom.    
  • Prepares progress reports. Grade written assignments, maintain accurate records, and promptly return graded work to students.    
  • Requisitions supplies and forms, from proper sources, and stores them properly.     
  • Attend formal and informal staff and faculty meetings.    
  • Inform the Associate Dean of unsatisfactory student’s academic progress, discipline or attitude problems, and occurrences that warrant discussion.    
  • Contact absent students to follow up on assignments and updates as needed.    
  • Active member and participate in the academic team to improve student attendance, retention, and graduation rates.    

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:    
  • Participate in all responsibilities of teaching BSN and VN courses, including student orientation, grading assignments, discussion posts, exams, and other course assessments.   
  • Mentor students scoring at or below 74 in coursework and actively take student appointments for individual and group mentoring sessions.   
  • Communicate with students, didactic course faculty, and/or Associate Dean regarding student progress and refer students to college services as necessary.    
  • Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation.   
  • Facilitate learning and learner development. Create lectures, content, and materials for courses.   
  • Develop/maintain syllabi and course content in Canvas (Learning Management System).   
  • Teach course material following evidence-based practice, the class schedule, and course syllabi.   
  • Maintains university-level rigor and demands a high level of academic excellence from students.   
  • Observe and evaluate students' work to determine progress; and provides feedback and suggestions for improvement.   
  • Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate assignments.   
  • Encourage an atmosphere where students may ask questions, offer opinions and express ideas.   
  • Participate in all course responsibilities and assignments related to teaching, grading, assessing courses, retaining students, and contributing actively as a course instructor, whether teaching in a team or as an individual.   
  • Grade assignments, proctor exams, review tests and engage in course delivery.    
  • Evaluate students’ academic and clinical performance; submit midterm and final grades on time.   
  • Complete simulation orientation and simulation debrief training with the Simulation Center Director.   
  • Act as mentor and role model for BSN and VN students in the classroom and clinical areas including the Skills and Simulation Lab.    
  • Maintain office schedule for mentoring and consultation.   
  • Ensure continued program quality and productivity through participation in faculty in-services, university meetings, and building a professional relationship with clinical agency personnel.   
  • Foster open communication with all departments within the institution to facilitate good working relationships.   
  • Follow appropriate Chain of Command; follows departmental and college policies in all administrative actions; maintains Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).   
  • Assist with student retention by employing measures such as calling, emailing, reaching out to students and referring individuals to appropriate support staff and resources.   
  • Be familiar and comply with clinical site policies and procedures. Complete all required training and orientation including but not limited to electronic health records and medication administration.    
  • Orient clinical site staff nurses to the level of the student and the specific learning outcomes for their clinical experience. Coordinate with clinicians at the clinical site to make student patient assignments. 
  • Supervise care provided by a group of students (usually 6 to 10 students in a group) while they complete their clinical rotation.   
  • Direct, instruct, and guide students in the clinical setting. Assign students weekly to patients based on student’s learning needs and patient assessment.    
  • Assist students in collecting pertinent objective and subjective data regarding patient health status.    
  • Engage students in comprehensive, individualized instruction in the observation, assessment, decision-making, and health teaching of patients, including the maintenance of patient health or prevention of illness or disease.   
  • Complete the mid-term and final clinical evaluation for each student.    
  • Provide evidence of yearly tuberculin skin tests and other required immunizations as per nursing program policy.   
  • Possess thorough knowledge of patient medications, treatments, and diagnoses, and be able to relate these aspects of patient care.   
  • Other duties as deemed necessary.   
   
OTHER FUNCTIONS:    
  • All full-time faculty are required to participate in the University commencement ceremonies, including wearing regalia from the college/university from which the degree was received.  (Twice yearly - Spring and Fall).   
  • Attend pinning ceremonies and other events and activities as assigned.   
  • Participates in and supports university service (special projects/events, community activities, etc.).   
  • Participates in Hallmark University (HU) and HU School of Nursing (HUSON) continuing education, developmental instructional methods, and teaching strategies for residential and/or distance education.   

REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL/PUBLIC ACTIVITIES:     
  • Professional Affiliations are suggested as they relate to the program content area.    
  • Mandatory Participation in the Hallmark Character Program: All employees are required to actively engage in this program to embody and promote our core values.    
  • Participate in all department and university meetings and all faculty development meetings.
  • Participate in graduation ceremonies.

KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ABILITIES:    
  • Leadership, time management, planning, and teamwork skills.    
  • Verbal, written, communication, and computer skills.    
  • Evidence of current American Heart Association CPR.   
  • Expertise in course material and continuing education in the subjects taught.   

 REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:       
  • Unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Texas.    
  • A master's degree or doctoral degree, preferably in nursing.
  • A minimum of two years of experience as a registered nurse, experience must be within the last five years.    
  • Minimum of four (4) years of related work experience full-time clinical experience in nursing required.   
  • Prior teaching experience is desired.
